Save it for later

This drive thru espresso stand in Crescent City has cups with a cup sleeve that covers the entire cup: thus keeping it warm for a much longer time. Clever.
Shameless plug: Wooden beaded necklace designed by Dayla Miller.

Crescent City, like many isolated beach towns, is an odd place.
Seaside Espresso sells bao (Chinese pork dumplings) along with their espresso. What next? Nachos with my caramel macchiato? Margaritas with sushi rolls? This takes me back to my Stella served in a Pacifico mug blog...what is this world coming to!?!? [insert Andy Rooney/Adam Corolla rant here]

And I feel quicker than a ray of light

And be there when I'll feed the trees...

Yes, we have big trees where I live, but it is still awe inspiring to be near a living thing this old, tall and beautiful.
If only there had been a tour :(

Rock lobster!

So we stumbled across the Catch Cafe in Trinidad at 9 pm and what can I say? First thing I saw was a guy hand battering big pieces of cod before placing it in the fryer, and I knew then this shack/cafe was a gem. To start with, the employees are really comfortable and friendly. The guy behind the counter said the rock cod was "swimming this morning." The fries are sprinkled with a sugar and salt blend, which makes them taste a little like sweet potato fries or kettle corn. Unfortunately, fried food doesn't photograph well, but take my word for it. This is the best fish and chips I've ever had.

The Catch Cafe

Sclemeel, schlimazel, hasenpfeffer incorporated!

We're gonna do it our way!!!
So we paid $20 (includes the deluxe $10 wine tasting) to take the winery tour. Being the geek I am, I was already wearing my newly purchased Sophia Coppola t-shirt for the tour. Why are tours SO MUCH FUN? Is it the inside secrets or stories behind something as simple as a mural that entertain us so?
Just yesterday David was complaining that the cheesiest tour I made him go on was the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, but oh the knowledge we obtained about the Von Trapps! Same with what we learned about the Coppolas. Like Francis only allows table wine to be sampled in the old world, stemless glasses, the way his Italian family (and might I add my Portuguese grandparents) did.
This day we watched as they put the spiral label on the Director's Cut wine. The spiral label is a reproduction of a zoetrope strip. Clever...

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

We are family

Francis Ford Coppola is brilliant. Not because of his movie directing talents, but because he wanted, and so he created, a kid friendly wine tasting venue. It's like he read my mind!!!!
There is a pool, cabines (cabanas), regulation bocce courts, kids tee-pee full of books, concert stage, restaurants, wine tour, gift shop, wine tasting and movie memorabilia! I have already planned next summer's vacay!!!

Red, red wine

Yes...we are "wine tasting" in the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt.

She's my olallaberry pie

Oops-forgot to take a pic of the pie. Here's the aftermath...

One way or another I'm gonna find ya'

I'm gonna getcha, getcha, getcha, getcha
Any dish that comes with a bib to wear while eating is worth the trouble and this cioppino from Duarte's is no exception!!!!
How did we find this tavern in the sleepy ocean town of Pescadero? Well, my principal Joey Campbell (whom we affectionally refer to as "J.C.") often speaks of his traditional family camping trip to Pescadero and the great food at Duarte's Tavern. It just so happens Guy Fieri has been here, too. So thanks to the newly appointed Assistant Superintendent J.C. (whom we will affectionately refer to as "A.S." come July 1) for recommending a place everyone loved.

Food should be worked for to be truly appreciated.
Crab legs had to be busted out, shrimp peeled and clams dug from their shells. My dad, mom, uncle Glen and I devoured the cioppino and just the chunky tomato broth was good enough to eat with a spoon. And so we did.

There's a tear in my beer

Cream of artichoke soup combined with cream of green chili soup and a Scrimshaw Pilsner.
Thinking of buying a new (stretchy) outfit for wedding.

Duarte's Tavern

Come on baby light my fire

But if you wanna leave, take good care

I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear...But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there...

At least on a cruise the Captain's night is at the beginning of the trip so the ladies can still zip up their dresses...but today we begin our foodie road trip that ends with my cousin's wedding in Oregon and I now have the dilemma of eating well and being able to zip my fitted pantsuit at the end of my foodie road trip. So my plan: eat my bag of fresh nectarines between our food stops. My second plan: Spanx.
We actually grabbed McDonalds for breakfast (we started with bad food so we'd have something to compare the good food to) and I was a good girl: oatmeal with fruit and no sugar and coffee.
Next stop: Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero...stay tuned.

And say that you love me...

Rachael Ray's Cheddar Mac and Cheese

My kids love Mac 'n' Cheese: the kind out of the box with the powder cheese that resembles Tang. Gross. It is difficult to understand why kids like that stuff, but hey it's cheap and easy. However, when I really want to impress my kids, I make the Cheddar Mac and Cheese version from Rachael Ray (I know, I know, she's not a real chef...but I find her endearing and her recipes uncomplicated). The kids love shell pasta because they are "helmets." I usually add 3/4 of a bag of peas because Mrs. Jerry Seinfeld isn't the only person who cares about her kids' nutritional needs and the helmets need a "head."
But, my main reason for making this dish is it's a cheap shot to get "I Love You's" and "You're the best mom cooker in the whole cooker world!" And isn't that what cooking's all about?

All Summer Long...

Summer is synonymous with grilling.
Early in our marriage, when David and I would  have people over for a BBQ, we'd plan the menu together, but then I found the recipes, went to the grocery store, cut, prepared, rubbed and marinated all the food. Then, David would grill it. As we sat with friends, our guests would pour the accolades on David, praising him for his grilling prowess. He would sit there and ever so humbly thank them for the compliments. Finally, after having enough of this on one particular summer night, in the middle of his shower of praises, I added, "Yes, David this chicken is so TASTY! What is in this marinade?" From then on, he made sure to let everyone know it was a joint effort (although in my mind it was more like 75/25 in my favor...how hard can it be to throw some meat on the grill and drink a beer while you wait for it to cook?)
Having said that, it wasn't until the first time I tried to cook chicken on the grill I realized how really tricky and scientific the entire process is so that the meat is somewhere between salmonella infested and carbon...and David is REALLY GOOD at it. I somehow manage to get both carbon and salmonella together in one bite. I now agree BBQing at our house is a 50/50 joint venture.
So, yesterday afternoon we had Ina Garten's Maple Roasted Butternut Squash (with roasted garlic you squeeze onto a piece of bread!!!) and BBQ'd ribs (not the saucy kind, but the dry rubbed type) and it was TASTY! Fall off the bone tasty...

I just can't get enough of nectarines

Living in the SJV may mean suffering through allergies, driving through tule fog in the winter and working for the IRS at some point in your life, but one thing makes up for it: the fruit!
These bad boys are from my friend Shirley, who purchased them from Friesen Farms in Kingsburg on Saginaw. Yum!!!!... and you can visit their website to check out what they have in advance: friesenfamilyfarms.com
Eating fruit all summer long is my trick to balancing out all the bad stuff I also enjoy eating. Now, here's the difference between me and Giada: she will wrap these in panCHETTA and act like her size 2 self eats cured pork all day long.

Dude looks like a lady

I don't like it when boys dress like girls and when girls dress like boys...and I'm really annoyed when my Stella doesn't come in the pretty glass!!!!!

Don't...don't you want me?

When my children were babies, I believed as they got older they should eat vegetables because as their parental "unit" I told them to. I made all of their baby food by pureeing veggies and fruits so they wouldn't have that nasty stuff that comes in a jar, making sure they were exposed to a variety of flavors and colors.
Now, as a five year old sits in front of me denying all healthy and viable options for dinner (and worse yet, he has influenced his three year old sister to do the same), I'm ready to ditch the "because I said so" defense.
When my kids were babies, my sister gave me Jessica Seinfeld's cookbook of trickery, where your kids are eating brownies made with spinach and carrots and don't even know it. Now, Shanan, I'm sorry you have to read this here for the first time, but I thought that was a crock: kids should eat vegetables for what they are and appreciate them for their texture, flavor and high vitamin and fiber content! I now realize this is the true crock. So, I broke out the cookbook and decided to make whole wheat pizza pockets with a thin layer of pureed spinach between the bread and sauce. As is my necessary custom, I made several substitutions (whole wheat bagels, homeade tomato sauce...), but kept the pureed spinach the same. Now, Jessica warns: "Let the pizzas cool 5 minutes before serving so the cheese cools and doesn't pull off (and the spinach stays completely invisible).
Now, Jessica "I'm the world's most perfect mother" Seinfeld, what do you do when your five year old peels the cheese off and discovers the hidden spinach layer and revolts!?!? Is this where your nanny steps in and you take off to the day spa?
UGH!
So, I simply went back to my original defense and made him eat it because I am his mother and he should appreciate spinach for its flavor, texture and high fiber content.
...and I told him he could have ice cream if he finished his dinner.

All of me, why not take all of me?...My lips...my arms...

No, this is not a Bachelorette Party cake...it's a college student's project!!!  My friend is going back to school to become a nurse, and she rose to the challenge of a creative project representing the digestive system in the form of this cake. She explained to me how much the class loved it and "ate every last piece of the cake."
"Even the poop chute?" I asked.
"They loved every piece of it...there wasn't anything left."

Now, I have a very sick sense of humer, but am I the only one bothered by this? These people who enjoyed eating body parts where urine and fecal matter run rampant, albeit one dimensional representations, are our future medical personnel!!!! I know, I know, Anthony Bourdain eats real poop chute, but he will not be removing my catheter some day.

At least the cake wasn't dark chocolate.

Alejandro...Fernando...Roberto!...Hot like Mexico, rejoice!

Actually Lady Gaga, it's all about Robertito!!!
Apparently I'm the last person in the SJV to discover Robertito's (which are all over the SJV) tacos!!!! Thick corn tortillas, carne asada, guac and all the other taco truck fixins' without the awkward glances...

"Don't look my way, Fernando..."
